Shrewsbury Male Voice Choir
There was music for all the family and the event was managed by Shrewsbury Town Council.
Shrewsbury Brass Band provided the music and Shrewsbury Male Voice Choir led the crowds with renditions of classic Christmas carols including Silent Night, Jingle Bells and Once in Royal David’s City.
Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Miles Kenny said: “Carols in the Square concert is a fantastic way to mark the festive season the week before Christmas.
“The town council worked tremendously hard to put on this well-loved event. It was wonderful to hear everyone singing in the Square.”
People all around the world were able to watch the concert online thanks to Shrewsbury-based company, Microvideo, which streamed the event live.
For the first time in the event’s history the concert was also broadcast inside Shrewsbury Market Hall where all the action from the main stage was relayed via large TV screens.
Charles Denscombe, from Microvideo, added: “We are one of the few towns globally to live stream an outside carol concert. It brings together Salopians from around the world and shows Shrewsbury as a traditional town that also embraces modern communication technology to promote itself.”
Roads around the Square were closed to traffic to allow the crowds to enjoy the spectacle and disperse safely.
Those attending the carol concert were able to enjoy a spot of shopping as the town’s shopping centres and independent traders stayed open until 8pm.
