Vienna Boys Choir Ave Maria

Since Thanksgiving is officially over, it’s time to get in the holiday spirit. And what better way to do so then with some classic holiday music?

On December 1, the Vienna Boys Choir will sing at Eisenhower Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. As the name suggests, the group consists of young trebles and altos ranging in age 10 to 14. The Austrian-based singers will perform a medley of classics, traditional Austrian folk songs, and Christmas carols.

According to the Center for Performing Arts, the program will be quite varied. The Vienna Boys Choir will sing everything from Claudio Monteverdi’s “Ave Maria” to the timeless classic “Feliz Navidad.”

Though the choir’s members are young, the history of the Vienna Boys Choir dates back to 1498. Emperor Maximilian I of Hapsburg ordered the creation of a choir, with six boys and a director. The Vienna Boys Choir has evolved quite a bit since then, and now boasts 100 members in total. These 100 members are split into touring companies that travel all over the world. Penn State will welcome the Mozart choir, which is directed by Bomi Kim, the first woman and first Korean to direct the Vienna Boys Choir.

Before the concert, Kim and company manager Tania Jastrebov will host a talkback. The informal discussion is free for all ticket holders.
